Overview

Petrith finally is going to school -- to stuffed toy school, where all the fluffy critters learn to be great toys. Petrith is excited about school but he has an embarrassing physical difference the other students don't understand. This makes for a difficult time for Petrith and the other toys until Petrith shows that being different isn't bad or good, it's just life. Written by Scottish-American author Annie Hallinan and illustrated by the extraordinary Amy Preveza, this soft-bound picture book is a tale of trust, compassion, understanding and tolerance. It's an excellent choice for reading aloud with younger children. The Discussion Guide leads to thinking about meeting new people, the differences among people, and the importance of understanding and tolerance. The popular and free web-based Read It Again feature enables youngsters to have the story read to them by the author, with her distinctive Scottish lilt. Note: This is the paperback edition.

Author Information

Annie Hallinan is a long-time writer who only recently made the jump to the excitement (and the worries) of having her work published. Writing stories for children has long been her passion, second only to rescuing and caring for abused animals. It is natural that pets, critters and even flowers often are the focus of her stories. Annie writes wherever she has a pen and paper. She's even happier when there is a dog close by. Ms. Hallinan grew up in Scotland and her stories have an old world tone young readers enjoy. She's traveled widely and lived not only in the U.K., Europe and the U.S., but also in China and Indonesia. I find stories in every kitten and puppy, every squirrel in the garden, every stuffed toy; they're like blueberries on the bush, waiting to be picked, she said. I write to entertain, to make people smile and maybe to help them see the world a little differently. Today Annie lives in North Carolina with her husband and three dogs. When not sitting at her Mac, creating her next tale, she enjoys gardening and golf. Amy is enjoying a remarkable career as a teacher and an illustrator. Her day job is at the CT Dept. of Developmental Services, where she works with children with special needs. She also contributes her special skills to Cornerstone Gardens, a new horticulture facility that will, when fully operational, assist young adults with developmental issues to develop their full potential through day programs at the gardens. Amy's special training and compassion make her a very valuable guide and counselor to her students. Amy also has worked in Special Education in the Madison Middle School (Trumbull CT) and at the White Brook Middle School (Easthampton MA).She's married and lives in Connecticut, and will be attending the Children's Book workshop in New York in February.
