Overview

"""""Spirituality"""" has become a buzzword in our contemporary culture as individuals strive for meaning and fulfillment. Its detachment from the church and conventional definitions of religious practice highlights the seeming redundancy of what has come before. """"Spirituality"""" in this light signals a new attempt to find wholeness unencumbered by outmoded doctrines and stale rituals. It is the conviction of this publication that the intuition behind contemporary searches for spiritual reality is a good one. It acknowledges that there must be more to life than what secular media or consumerism might tell us. The joyful message of Perspectives on Prayer and Spirituality is that the spiritual quest is a valid one and worth exploring. There is treasure to be found. However, the surprise is that we must rediscover what we have left behind. In the words of G. K. Chesterton, """"it is not that the Christian ideal has been tried and found wanting, rather it has been found difficult and left untried."""" This book offers us the tools to mine the riches of Christian spirituality and find that elusive treasure. The title, Perspectives on Prayer and Spirituality, alerts us to the fact that life-giving spirituality stems from relationship with a personal God who can be known."

One of the greatest needs of our day is a deep Christian spirituality, anchored in Scripture, drawing on the Christian tradition, and opening out onto all of life. This volume embodies these characteristics and is thus highly recommended. My hope is that it will be widely read and deepen our spiritual practices both individually and communally. Nothing less than our capacity to spread forth the fragrance of Christ in his world is at stake. --Craig G. Bartholomew, Director, Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology, Cambridge The series of reflections on prayer and spirituality captured in this delightfully presented volume is fresh and far-reaching. Set in four sections focusing on God, ourselves, worshipping together, and serving others, it draws in a fine compendium of authors with authentic insights, and offers a study which is both historic and of contemporary relevance. Its engagement with important theological and devotional topics is thorough, inclusive, thoughtful, and urges us all to greater reflection. I believe this book will become a companion to many who want a deeper walk with God. --Elaine Storkey, author, lecturer, and broadcaster A kaleidoscope of thinking and creativity, gathered together under the overarching theme of prayer and spirituality. This book of essays will inspire, entice, and encourage. It is theological, practical, and biblical, and certainly has me longing to know more of the depths and riches of my relationship with God. Congratulations to all concerned. --Harold Miller, former bishop of Down and Dromore Prayer is one of God's greatest gifts. Everyone, whether beginning the journey of prayer or further down that road, needs renewal of vision to keep going. All the writers here aim to help Christians rediscover some of the riches of prayer that lie within the Christian faith. The book is wide-ranging and carefully structured to cover intimacy with God, gaining a positive and realistic appraisal of our role in prayer, growing in prayer with others and serving the world through prayer-shaped discipleship. It is exploratory, yet grounded in Scripture, and offers a wealth of material to ponder. --Liz Hoare, Tutor in Spiritual Formation and Dean for Women, Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford
