OverviewPersonal, Social and Health Education in the School Grounds provides a range of exciting ideas and activities for practical work outside, using the school grounds as an inspiration and a resource. The first section of the book, 'Getting Together' is concerned with starting points and helping everyone in the class to get to know each other. The next section, 'Getting to Know Ourselves' helps children develop self-awareness and shows how using the natural world helps them to explore their capabilities, senses and feelings, and enhances self-esteem. 'Living and Working Together' provides activities to enhance social interaction. 'Citizenship and Community' looks at the wider connections to the school grounds. Lastly, 'Taking Responsibility' suggests ways in which children can play a part in planning and implementing development of the grounds. Activities follow from the demands of the National Curriculum non-statutory guidance for Personal, Social and Health Education for Key Stages 1 and 2. The activities are designed to be used by non-specialist teachers, in all kinds of school environment. Photocopiable worksheets provide additional resources for puplis' work. Alan Dyer and Jeff Lewis are both teacher trainers with many years' experience working with children and teachers. In this book they have combined their specialisms of environmental education and personal, social and health education with input from the Schools' Health Education Unit.
