Shafrir received doctorate in mathematical sciences from the University of California at Los Angeles and doctorate in developmental psychology from York University, Toronto. Shafrir was founder and director of the Institute of Planetary and Space Science at Tel-Aviv University; before moving to the University of Toronto he was Adjunct Professor at the University of Wisconsin and at Columbia University.
