Multiword vocabulary in English often appears confusing to non-native speakers and a source of frustration. For instructors of English, it seems equally frustrating to explain, something we intuitively understand through application, but cannot easily explained. Fortunately, by viewing multiword vocabulary through the actual and symbolic meaning of the root components, the meaning can usually be understood. Author Information

The author was an English Language professor in Korea for 14 years; his last position was with the English Linguistics Department of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He noticed that Korean students knew a healthy range of English single-word vocabulary but were very confused with multiword vocabulary. The instruction given students is often general in nature with multiword vocabulary introduced in an isolated and seemingly random manner.
