Overview

Houston, 1985. A group of teenagers, drawn together by a passion for drugs and Heavy Metal, torture and murder one of their companions. But no one knows. Less than a month later, two more brutal crimes follow. As detectives hunt for the killers, the city is rocked when the media brands the teens members of a satanic cult. Thrust into a moral spin, the young killers wonder: should they turn each other into the police, or hope to escape the consequences of their horrifying crimes?Out Here in the Darkness seizes the reader by the throat, taking them step by shocking step through the crimes, the investigations, and the trials and later follows a convicted double-murderer on his 33-year quest for redemption, deep in the dark underbelly of the American prison system. A spellbinding page-turner and an unrelenting trip down the wrong side of the tracks, Out Here in the Darkness will keep you mesmerized and awake at night pondering its questions: What was the motivation behind such savagery? And is there any way to discover the truth buried three decades ago, in the darkness?

Reviews

Out Here in the Darkness is a well-researched book that combines actual details of police efforts to find those responsible with specific court transcripts once they face the justice system for sentencing. But what elevates this true crime story above becoming a dry recording of facts is Stevens' ability to make these young criminals real people who have gone astray. - Viga Boland for Readers' Favorite An alluring read that leaves you thinking about both the story AND the facts long after you've put the book down, I highly recommend this tale to anyone looking for something just wonderfully different enough to read it more than once! - Jaysen Buterin, The Mad Ones Films, . I have always believed in justice and it might be why I sought out a career in law. After reading Out Here in the Darkness twice, I wonder if society really knows or understands what justice really is. I highly recommend the book. - Earl Musick, retired Lieutenant, Houston Police Department and retired, Harris County Assistant District Attorney If there was ever a book that made you feel like a fly on the wall, this is the one! Not only is Stevens story extremely well researched, the dialogue, the interviews, well-organized, it's the special attention to detail that transforms a person back to the mid 80's to a virtual movie-set in your mind. John Miller, Beta reader.
