OverviewUpon locating in Oelwein last fall, and encouraged to undertake some research in local history, the writer soon discovered that the history of Oelwein is primarily the history of the Chicago Great Western Railway, and to a considerable extent, the Oelwein Shops of that company. This 2011 historic narrative tells the story of the history and construction of the Chicago Great Western Railway's Oelwein Shops. Illustrated using many historic and current (2011) photographs. Considered state-of-the-art when constructed at the beginning of the 20th Century, the Oelwein Shops had a major impact on the development of Oelwein and a wide-ranging impact on industrial efficiency. Built by the Chicago Great Western Railway at the geographic nexus of their main lines, the Oelwein Shops repaired and built the majority of the steam engines and wooden cars used by the Chicago Great Western for decades. Widely reported by trade journals of the day as a model of efficiency, the design and operation of the Oelwein Shops influenced the other industries, including the infant automobile industry. In large part, this was due to the Oelwein Shop's Master Mechanic from 1904 to 1909-Mr. Walter Chrysler. Well known within the railroad industry, Mr. Chrysler later rose to even greater fame for his later work in the automobile industry.
