OverviewOnondaga is an Iroquoian language spoken at the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario and at Onondaga Nation near Syracuse, New York. Once spoken by a large Iroquoian population in New York State, the use of Onondaga is now restricted to only a small number of speakers. To ensure the survival of this language, Woodbury provides Natives and non-Natives with an invaluable tool to teach and preserve Onondaga. The dictionary is the result of 30 years of research conducted with contemporary speakers, as well as reference to 19th- and 20th-century textual sources. It is a comprehensive dictionary of Onondaga using a scientific orthography. Comprised of three sections - Onondaga-English, English-Onondaga and a set of thematically arranged appendices - Woodbury provides a variety of meanings and inflections for each lexical base as well as cross-references for related bases including grammatical, phonological, historical and cultural information. The appendices, organised under the headings Nature, People, Household and Community include lists of words from semantic categories that play an important role in daily life. The dictionary should be a much-needed resource to ensure the survival of the Onondaga language and should be valuable to the ongoing efforts to sustain this otherwise endangered language.
