OverviewOn Becoming a Treaty Partner is a personal and professional reflection on the Treaty relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and institutions in Canada. It is based on the author's long experience of living and working with Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories. Canadians have not yet achieved a meaningful or honorable relationship with Indigenous peoples because we fail to act as though 'what is of value to you is of value to us'. The author believes that we can, and must, do better. We can become a better Canadian society by more fully acknowledging and embracing Indigenous knowledge, beliefs, values, and skills -- consistent with the spirit of our Treaty commitments.
