Overview

In this collection of essays, Linda C. Wisniewski considers the influence of helpful strangers, foreign cultures, and spiritual exploration in the light of family and heritage. A loving grandfather, a stranger who saved her life, and two homemaking aunts recall life in the mid-twentieth century. Post millenium, Italians giving directions in the rain, an Eiffel Tower evacuation and other events explore the connections to be found in strange places. Old age brings reflection on the unforgettable moments of a woman's life.

Reviews

"""This collection was a real joy - different from what I usually read, but I am so glad I stepped out of my box. The essays, taken together, tell a story that is at once deeply personal and at the same time universal. Grouped into seven parts, beginning with A Midcentury Childhood and ending with She Writes, they tell the story of a girl raised to be silent, who learns to be heard through writing. They are filled with an awareness of the importance of the small, seemingly insignificant moments that make up our lives and how memories of those moments lead to understanding and form who we are. One that particularly touched me was the story/essay about a father who yelled and his now-adult daughter who, remembering, thinks: ""What an unhappy man he must have been."" Similarly, the realization of the connection that exists between mother and daughter in A Connecting Thread. Another bit that made me smile: ""May there always be room in this world for cranky old ladies. Just in case I ever need it."" These are just a few of the many times I stopped to re-read, nodding my head in recognition. The overall tone of the collection is a sense of decency. The writing style is beautiful for its clarity and freshness."" Sandra Carey Cody, author of the Jennie Connors/Riverview Manor mystery series ""Fantastic collection of essays - Honest, emotional, and full of the author's memories that were often relatable. I truly enjoyed this candid collection of essays. The author is a talented storyteller"". - Karen Pokras, author of The Backyard Secrets of Danny Wexler"
