Overview

Retired NYPD Detective Vic Ferrari provides a humorous behind the scene look into the New York City Police Department with NYPD: Through The Looking Glass, stories from inside America's largest police department. Ferrari narrates a fascinating police history lesson wrapped in personal anecdotes with rare insight into the NYPD. Lapse's in judgment, like moving a corpse to avoid working overtime or safeguarding a loaded revolver in an oven (Yes, it exploded!) show the human side of a 35,000 member police department filled with unusual characters. The reader gets a taste of what it's like to be an NYPD police officer with details and insight not found watching Blue Bloods or Law and Order. Everything from how an NYPD station house operates to the mascots who inhabit them is covered in exciting detail. A chapter listing precinct nicknames explains the rich history of the NYPD with colorful names like Fort Surrender, Fort Gyro, and Fort Cirrhosis. A 16-page glossary filled with comical definitions explains cop lingo like: Desk number: A phone number veiled in secrecy and protected more than the president of the United States or Bill Murray's personal cell number. Star Wars: A dive bar located in the Bronx. Patrons included drunks, pimps, ho's and of course cops. The location featured a giant moose head mounted above the bar, riddled with bullet holes. Tune up: Physical beating. Everything from gun battles to practical jokes (Smearing fingerprint ink on toilet seats or placing live chickens in desk drawers) explains a dark sense of humor many NYPD members have and use as a coping mechanism to deal with the stress of the job. If you enjoy reading true crime, watching Live PD or fascinated with police work, you've picked up the right book.

1- Love this book. Short stories from the NYPD! If you like an easy read with funny and interesting stories this is the book for you! Vic, is a great writer and apparently was a police officer and detective for 20 years in NYC. So the stories are taken right from his experience. Love it! 2- I am a native New Yorker and have read a lot of books about the NYPD. This one of the best! The author gives a straight forward look at the NYPD and doesn't spare anyone. I have to say that this is really great fun. Vic Ferrari's stories are hilarious and moving. Vic, please write another book about NYC and the truly great PD! 3- I enjoyed this book so much that I had to pace myself or I would have read the entire thing in one sitting. Some of Vic's stories were so funny that I actually found myself laughing out loud. I am so glad I splurged on the paperback so that I can pass it on to my friends. One of the best books I have read in a long time. I can't wait for Vic's next masterpiece!!! 4- Det. Ferrari has a great writing style that makes the stories come alive. I appreciate you taking the time to write this book and share some old war stories from your years on the job. 5- I rarely write a review but this is the most interesting, funny book I've read in many years. (and I read roughly 70 books a year). 6- I liked the fact that the author was very candid. I wanted to know what a police officer's job entails, and this book is very good about this. There are many funny stories. I would recommend it. 7- Love this book. Short stories from the NYPD! If you like an easy read with funny and interesting stories this is the book for you! Vic, is a great writer and apparently was a police officer and detective for 20 years in NYC. So the stories are taken right from his experience. Love it! 8- I enjoyed this book. I can't imagine being a police officer let alone in New York City. I would be scared to death. I admire men and women who can do this. I worked as a psych nurse and know how crazy people can be. I will most likely read another one of his books.

Author Information

Vic Ferrari, author of Dickheads & Debauchery and Other Ingenious Ways to Die, is a retired twenty-year veteran of the New York City Police Department. A Bronx resident for over 40 years, he now splits his time between sunny Florida and his timeshare in North Korea. He lives with his Irish Wolfhound puppy Dougal, who follows him everywhere, including the bathroom. He enjoys writing, cooking, and managing a coed softball team filled with unhappy complaining miscreants. This past summer he fulfilled his childhood dream of throwing out the first pitch at a minor league baseball game under an assumed name.
