Se licenci en Educacin en 1936, y fue profesora en Wisconsin, Michigan, Louisiana y Florida, entre otros. En 1941 se cas con un soldado, Gordon Rogers, de quien se divorci en 1949. Mientras ste luchaba en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, ella obtuvo un ttulo de trabajo social en la Universidad de Chicago. Volvi a casarse en 1951, pero este segundo matrimonio tampoco dur. Con su primer marido tuvo un embarazo problemtico que la oblig a practicarse una histerectoma, incapacitndola para tener hijos, si bien adopt a dos mujeres adultas, compaeras suyas de investigacin.
