Virginia Satir, autora y psicoterapeuta estadounidense, naci el 26 de junio de 1916 en Neillsville, Wisconsin. Lectora precoz, aprendi a leer a los tres aos. Se licenci en Educacin en 1936, y fue profesora en Wisconsin, Michigan, Louisiana y Florida, entre otros. En 1941 se cas con un soldado, Gordon Rogers, de quien se divorci en 1949. Mientras ste luchaba en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, ella obtuvo un ttulo de trabajo social en la Universidad de Chicago. Volvi a casarse en 1951, pero este segundo matrimonio tampoco dur. Con su primer marido tuvo un embarazo problemtico que la oblig a practicarse una histerectoma, incapacitndola para tener hijos, si bien adopt a dos mujeres adultas, compaeras suyas de investigacin. Virginia Satir is one of the forerunners of family therapy and is among the ten most influential leaders in the history of psychotherapy. She has served as an advisor to governments, higher education institutions, and professional associations around the world, as well as a trainer of therapists. Among her most outstanding books are Family Therapy Step by Step, Exercises for Human Communication, New relationships in the Family Nucleus, and In Intimate Contact.
