Overview"Hua Quan (Glorious Boxing) is a northern long fist style of kung fu and therefore requires good physical coordination, flexibility, strength and understanding of proper body alignment (structure). Its movements are very clear and defined with every posture being interconnected to each other. This makes understanding your body structure very important. There is a saying that states ""release hands moving like a wild cyclone, but stand as calm as Mount Tai."" This means that even though there is great speed in the execution of Hua Quan the stability and structure must be maintained at all times." Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationJoe Maury was born and raised in New York and started training in 1976 with his brother in law, who was a senior student of the areas leading practitioner in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Master Moy Yat. He trained in Wing Chun kung fu for a few years. Wing Chun is a southern style of kung fu that is known for its rapid hand defenses and low kicks. Being young and impressed by the high kicking styles, introduced by the popularity of the kung fu movies of the late 70's, he wanted to learn a style that incorporated high kicking. Since high kicking was associated with the northern styles of kung fu, he began his journey in search of a teacher. He found two great teachers. One was Master Jun Fee Yamamoto from the northern dragon system of kung fu. Master Yamamoto learned his kung fu when he lived in Hawaii under Master Chan Fai Yi, one of the last masters known to have the complete northern dragon system of kung fu. The other great teacher was Master Chen Hei Fuk of the northern long fist (Hua Quan) system of kung fu. Master Chen learned his kung fu from his father who was a direct student of Grandmaster Cai Guiging, the last recorded grandmaster of the northern long fist system of Hua Quan (Glorious Boxing) kung fu. Throughout the years while living and visiting New York (when he moved up north to Massachusetts he continued to visit and train in New York for over 15 years) he got the opportunity to train with some of the areas finest teachers and practitioners that were kind enough to share their knowledge of kung fu.
