Today, Michael Shone Sr lives with his wife, on Fidalgo Island in Northwest Washington State. He devotes much time to writing and creates art work for educational material. He has always loved the sea and ships and his 65 inch scale model of the tugboat, Kathy Sue is a testament to his dedication towards the romance of the Sea. A Pacific Northwest Native , Michael spent many of his early years on the shores of Puget Sound . Raft building was the predominate theme of his day at the beach. As a teen, he was a member of Bellingham's Sea Scout troop and joined the US Coast Guard in 1959. Upon discharge in 1965, he headed for the ship yards so as to learn how to build them. Retiring from being a hotdog pipefitter/welder , he began college and majored in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and in 1963 was a certified Washington State Drug and Alcohol Counselor. Working with teens, as he wrote about in the adventures of Calvin Pstone's no smoking 101 cruise, he found that cigarettes were far and away more profound than he and many have found them to be. He began the book, No Smoking 101 , in 2005 using his Addiction Artwork so as to leave the reader with a way to look at smoking in a completely new light. . .no pun intended. His dream to write a book about his many sea adventures prompted his writing a story that would help or even succeed in throwing a wet blanket on a child's idea of smoking their first cigarette.
