As both author and illustrator, she uses all of her skills to jazz up the concepts in her books. Of course, presentation is only the icing on the cake... Ramona's research goes straight to the source. After collecting input from experts in the field, she writes a rough manuscript or two and begins the layout and design process. Early in the game, Ramona explores art styles to see what best supports the message. Then she bounces back and forth between writing and thumbnail sketches to help the story flow so it's a complete and satisfying read. Ramona says: ""It's like doing a jigsaw puzzle, except you create the pieces from scratch yourself. And a lot of pieces don't end up fitting, so you've got this pile of sketches and notes that didn't work. That's okay, though...it's the end result that counts."" The balancing act goes on until the message shines through. As a child Ramona knew she wanted to use her creativity to help others, but had a lot to learn. She spent two years at Ambassador College and took night classes at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design before receiving her art degree from California State University, Los Angeles. She was a graphic designer at a publishing firm for several years before moving from the West Coast back to the South. She is active with fellow artists and writers who help critique her work. Ramona received the National Museum of Women in the Arts award in Arkansas in the year 2000 for her first book, ""The Goat Woman of Smackover"" which is rendered in pen and ink. ""Now Caitlin Can"" followed. Crafted of paper and fabric collage, this hardcover book made the recommended book list of the National Kidney Foundation. ""A Day Set Apart, Celebrating the Sabbath"" is the Sabbath book for Christian children, and was created using brilliant watercolor to depict a joyful day of rest. ""Kids' Book of Bible Feast Days and their Secrets to the Future"" is a lively mix of paint, textural collage and digital drawings. This unique Christian book lists the festivals representing the step-by-step events that lead up to God's kingdom. ""Manners and Tips for Caring Kids: Based on the Fruit of the Spirit"" outlines how love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control can help kids grow manners that come from the heart. This book received the 2018 Illumination bronze medal in Education. The 104-page ""Nine Ways to Win: Fruit of the Spirit Activity Book"" is chock full of printables that give kids a hands-on way of learning the traits that not only improve manners, but help them to succeed at life in general. Ramona and her husband have raised three daughters and are happily welcoming the next generation. Grandkids are now Ramona's excuse for all the craft supplies and children's books that fill her shelves!" Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
