Reviews

These two books, part of a series on drugs, begin with gripping real-life news stories and colorful photographs. Then the authors provide very good overviews of U.S. and international regulatory history, scary evidence of health risks and potential criminal consequences, myth-vs-fact charts, longitudinal statistics, and ways to get help and quit an addiction. A glossary, extensive chapter notes, a one-page further-reading section, and an index round out the book. Smoking cigarettes or cigars and chewing smokeless tobacco are discussed along with nicotine and THC withdrawal symptoms. In Marijuana=Busted!, detailed procedures are expounded on drug testing, arrest, and punishment, especially for selling, because it is illegal; but users are likely to become dependent on THC. The book explains the controversial issue of legalizing marijuana for its therapeutic benefit for pain and nausea management during chemotherapy and for inducing weight gain among AIDS patients; for example, there are photographs of an angry talk-show host Montel Williams demonstrating with Stop Arresting Patients... signs, and close-ups show Marinol(R) or synthetic THC pills. In fact, many states and countries (e.g., Canada and England) have decriminalized the personal adult use of marijuana. However, the clear danger of driving under the influence of marijuana or alcohol, is persuasively presented; so, too, are the dangers of ingesting selected toxic chemicals (besides tar and carbon monoxide, with their common uses) found in cigarettes and that have serious environmental impacts, including producing litter, polluting soil and water, and generating secondhand smoke.
