As a young graduate student at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, he was thrilled to find evidence of the places described in myth still intact. He continued his studies, received his Ph.D. at University College London, University of London, and now teaches courses in humanities, the arts, ancient history, and archeology at Stanford University.
