Fernández is Clinical Assistant Professor of Spanish and Director of the Spanish Basic Language Program at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She has ample experience teaching Spanish at several higher learning institutions both in the USA and Mexico, and in the creation of teaching materials. Her research focuses on the acquisition of grammar and on task-based language teaching, and has been published in journals such as The Language Educator, Hispania, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition as well as in several book chapters. She wrote Input destacado y adquisición de la gramática (Enhanced Input and Grammar Acquisition) published by Arco/Libros, Spain (2016). Muriel Gallego is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics-Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages, where she also serves as Language Program Director for Lower Division Spanish. Muriel teaches graduate and undergraduate level classes in language teaching, instructed foreign language acquisition, language variation and change, and Hispanic sociolinguistics as well as Spanish language (all levels). She has facilitated workshops and different PD events for World Language K-12 teachers both in the USA and in countries such as Argentina, Croatia, and Sweden. Her research was published in journals such as Hispania, Foreign Language Annals, and Spanish in Context. She has served as an AP reader and as an external reviewer for numerous grant competitions for the Department of Education, Washington DC. She was awarded the Ohio University College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award in 2012, the Diversity and Inclusion Award in 2016, and the Service and Leadership Award in 2019.
