OverviewKate Sanborn (1839-1917) was an American author, teacher and lecturer, and also a reviewer, compiler, essayist, and farmer who was famous for her cooking and housekeeping. She was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, where her father occupied the chair of Latin and English Literature at Dartmouth College, and she was educated at home mainly by him. Such was their love and respect for one another that the instruction she received was never a drudgery for either teacher or pupil, and having inherited a love of teaching, Sanborn took up the profession herself and soon also began lecturing, taking on tours that met with great success. She began publishing her work in the 1880s and some of her most successful books were those about the abandoned farm she purchased near Boston which introduced readers to her original ideas regarding farming. First published in 1896, My Literary Zoo is a compilation of stories, poems and anecdotes about the pets and other animals beloved of famous figures from the world of literature and the arts, with separate sections devoted to dogs, cats, and a medley of other animals.
