Overview

U Lee-Johnson describes her life in stunning emotionally charged abstract paintings that describe the exhilaration of a surgery that corrected a disfigurement, the joys of being a parent, the horrors of a mental hospital, and the serine beauty of the Caribbean. This is a staggering journey into the philosophy and soul of a person. The paintings are charged with feelings and the accompanying text sets a unique context for the meaning of the paintings. U Lee-Johnson was born disfigured, one eye did not develop, into a society that stigmatized handicap. Her mother suffered stress and severe malnutrition during the Korean War. The book illustrates screams, conflict, and shame with parents, a surgery that opened the door to social life, adolescence, mid-life mental breakdown, divorce, and recovery. The later chapters have paintings depicting sailing a sailboat through the Caribbean, an interest in Fractal geometry, and even geological rocks called Tafoni.

Reviews

"Pattern in Randomness, Beauty in Tragedy Ms. Johnson does a wonderful job walking us through her life through her art. And her art beautifully depicts her emotions and mental state along the way. Her use of color and pattern is bold and compelling. And she tells a real story of the highs and lows of her life. Thank you for sharing your life journey through your fantastic art! The book delves into the artist's inner world through the language of abstraction, allowing emotions to take center stage. The artworks, diverse in their abstract nature, communicate a spectrum of feelings. From vibrant and dynamic compositions to serene and introspective pieces, each painting offers a unique glimpse into the artist's emotional landscape. The author shows how one can overcome difficulties and setbacks in life. Abstract paintings provide a visual and emotional feel of the situations. Together with the text, each page is a real treat in color, feeling, and story. It is an excellent book to return to time and again. The beauty of ""My Life"" is not solely in its aesthetic appeal but in the dialogue it fosters. The fractal patterns serve as a conduit for personal interpretation, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate designs and discover connections with their own emotional experiences."
