Overview

A COLLECTION OF CHILDREN'S BEDTIME STORIES Very educative and funny, a must read for any child as it teaches basic morals at an early age. You think you are clever building a house from sticks and grass, today I will eat you, said the hyena, Rabbit woke up from his nap and was very frightened. Rabbit run as fast as he could, jumping from side to side and over small bushes, but hyena was close on his heels. Rabbit finally managed to reach Tortoise's house and jumped in through the narrow door. She lived with the baboons for a very long time and she thought she was one of them. She learnt how to talk like them and behaved like them. She even learnt the language of the other animals in the forest. As she grew older she begun to notice that she was different from her baboon family members; they were hairy and had tails, she could easily walk and run on her two legs, but they had to use their hands and legs when running. She realized that they were not her real family at all. You are only older because you chose to be born before me, but the only thing you know is eating mushrooms. I can out run you on any day, Rabbit told Tortoise in a rude tone. No Rabbit, you can run faster than me, Tortoise replied. Okay then let's run a race and whoever loses will have to respect the winner, Rabbit challenged. Tortoise accepted the challenge and they asked Elephant, who was busy rubbing his back against a tree, to stand at the finishing point of the race to see who would win the race.Rain prepared for the arrival of his friend, he then remembered something, my friend eats almost anything in his way and he might end up burning my house. So he moved slowly round his home making the whole area very wet. When fire came with all his ferocity he found that the area around the house was wet and rain had prepared lot of dry grass for him to eat on a dry patch of land. The two had a good time and fire went back very happy. Monkey divided the food into two portions, looked the portions closely measuring them with his eyes then said, No this one is more than the other, he then cut off a part from one of the portions and threw it into his mouth. Again he looked at the two plates carefully. Hmmmmm, this one is now more than this one, he said and took a piece from one of the plates and ate it. Oh no this one is now bigger, he ate off another piece. Now the new king had a habit of biting them and even eating them whenever he held court. The frogs that had been crying for a king now started living in fear. The king would sometimes even sneak on unsuspecting frogs and eat them; his appetite for frogs was never satisfied. The frogs ran back to the gods and pleaded to be given back their old king, the log.A leopard that was resting under a tree was awakened by the pain of being stepped on by elephant. He saw that it was elephant chasing rabbit and he blamed rabbit for the pain of being stepped on by elephant, soon he too joined in the chase. Rhino that was taking its afternoon nap under a shade was hit by elephant; he too blamed rabbit and joined in the chase. Soon almost all the animals in the forest were chasing rabbit. Rabbit was running out of breath and luckily he found a burrow and quickly jumped into it and began listening to what the animals outside were saying. One day he came back from hunting only to find his house in disarray, things were strewn all over the ground, some broken and there were spots blood on the ground around and inside the house. The door was open wide and there was no sign of his dog or baby. He tried searching and calling out loud but only all was silent. He thought of what could have happened, but was saddened and angered when his dog finally appeared; it had blood on its paws and around the mouth. His immediate thought was that the dog had killed his child and eaten him, so in a rage he picked and axe and killed it ...
