He began his photography career in 1983. His work has been widely published in calendars, books, magazines including Audubon, National Geographic, Backpacker, Outdoor Photographer, and Sierra. Mark Schlenz first discovered his interests in mountaineering, writing, and environmental literature while living in the Eastern Sierra in the 1970s. He later taught high school English Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1994 with a dissertation on Eastern California writer Mary Austin.
