OverviewExcerpt from Modern Hebrew Literature (With a Preface by the Haham Dr. Gaster): A Paper Read Before the Annual Conference, in London, of the International Society, of Philology, Science and Fine Arts; On June 25, 1915 And yet a few words on the subject matter and on the manner in which Mr. Wassilevsky has handled it may perhaps not be out Of place, if only as an expression of my own Opinion. 'to start with the last: I have been greatly impressed by the ability with which Mr. W assilevsky has been able to survey so complicated a movement and to compress it within the narrow frame of a short essay. The impartiality and sound judgment displayed in adjudi cating the merits of the numerous authors, the acumen with which he delineates the leading features and the characteristic traits of these writers mark out this essay as being not only a sketch but also a critical guide to those who would like to get into close touch with these men and their work. One need not necessarily agree with each of the conclusions of Mr. Wassilevsky, and we seldom agree with other men's conclusions if they happen to run counter to our own. But such is human weakness, and curiously enough it is strongly displayed in the judgment passed by one Hebrew writer upon the works Of another, especially if he happen to be his con temporary. \ve are always much too critical with our own and singularly lenient with the outsider.
