OverviewHere is the tale of three significant ethnic groups who settled and lived together in the Nigerian state of Kogi, whose capital is known as Lokoja. The confluence of the Rivers Niger and Benue was identified by Mongo Park in Lokoja, in the center of Nigeria. It is located at 750 North and 644 East Latitude. The temperatures here are typically high. The afternoon is most times when temperatures are at their maximum. The Niger and Benue Rivers, two of West Africa's major rivers, meet in Lokoja, giving the city its notoriety. During the colonial era, these natural waterways were important methods of transit and communication, particularly for those who lived near rivers. Lokoja served as a commercial meeting point during the east-west kola nut trade in West Africa because of its location near the junction. When the Europeans arrived, Lokoja became well-known around the world as the first British settlement in Nigeria and a significant inland port for European businesses. The town expanded to become a multicultural community, populated primarily by Hausa from northern Nigeria and several ethnic groups from the middle belt.
