Overview

Mental Health in Our Schools: An Applied Collaborative Approach to Working with Students and Families offers practical strategies for school personnel to work collaboratively in addressing the mental health needs of students. The book examines four primary mental health disorders often seen in children and adolescents. Readers learn the signs and symptoms of these disorders, their risk factors, and their neurological components. Case vignettes at the elementary, middle, and high school levels help readers conceptualize how to work with all systems available to employ interventions and advance students' social, emotional, and academic growth. The text addresses the ethical, legal, and cultural implications of treating mental health issues within the school system, as well as how to work with community providers and families to promote overall well-being for disadvantaged youth and those suffering from mental health issues. A timely and critical resource for individuals in educational settings, Mental Health in Our Schools is an invaluable resource for courses and programs in education and school administration. It can also prove valuable for active school personnel, including administrators, counselors, teachers, and more.

Reviews

Textbooks adopted for use by graduate students new to the profession of counseling must be written in a way that captures the interest and encourages the professionalism of the beginning counselor. Mental Health in Our Schools: An Applied Collaborative Approach can best be described as engaging, comprehensive, and motivating. Dr. Jessica Russo, a skilled writer and editor and experienced counselor and counselor educator, along with Yvonne Culver and Jessica Henry, have created a cutting-edge description of how school counselors and other school personnel can collaborate with mental health professionals in the community to address the mental health challenges faced by students in today's schools. I think this textbook should be used by those preparing to work with youth in our schools and those professionals already working in the schools. I recommend it without reservation. David Capuzzi, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, Past President, American Counseling Association Today's youth are experiencing more mental health issues than ever before. Therefore, it is imperative that schools work collaboratively in treating the social and emotional needs of children and adolescents. Mental Health in Our Schools: An Applied Collaborative Approach contains ways in which professionals within the schools, families, and the community can work together in helping students navigate the multitude of problems they face in the modern school milieu. Heather Ambrose, Ph.D., LCMHC, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, President-Elect, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision
