Overview

Mawuli School was the first Secondary School founded by the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Church in 1950 at Ho in the Trans Volta Togoland Mandated Territory which was under the administration of the Gold Coast Colony. To illustrate the strong link between the two, the book traced the history of the E. P. Church, from its beginning to the founding of the School. The book gives the historical account of the founding of Mawuli School in 1950 from the Founders' perspective and life and activities in the School from the Students' perspective up to 1955, the year the Author graduated from Form 5. Coincidentally, the first girls were admitted in 1955 and Mawuli became a co-ed school.

Author Information

David C. K. Tay (Class of 55) was born and raised in Keta and had his elementary education in the Eυe Presbyterian Church School. On passing his Common Entrance Examination, he was admitted to Mawuli School in January 1951, the second year of the School's founding. With his interest in the art subject, it was no surprise that David was one of two art students who competed in designing the Mawuli crest with the 3H motto: Head, Heart, Hand. In his later years, David was the Library Officer of the School. David completed Form 5 in 1955 and entered Kumasi College of Technology (KCT) in January 1956 for Sixth Form education. He obtained the Cambridge Higher School Certificate in 1957 and a B.Sc (Eng) degree in Civil Engineering in 1961. He continued his education in University of Toronto, Canada, where he obtained a M.A.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering in 1963 and a Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering in 1968. Dr. Tay went to Ghana in 1968 and taught in the Faculty of Engineering at the KNUST. Dr. Tay returned to Toronto, Canada in 1970 and has since worked as a consulting engineer responsible for a large variety of projects, including the award-winning $5.8 billion Hibernia Offshore Oil Platform. Over the years, his assignments and projects took him to several parts of Canada, the United States, eastern and southern African countries, Barbados, France and Norway. Dr. Tay is a registered Professional Engineer in Canada, a Consulting Engineer and a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
