Overview

Piet Roefs has retired after 30 years on the Rotterdam Seaport Police and left a loveless marriage, to seek a new life in the south of France. He travels on his small Dutch barge, converted from a tugboat, from the far northern corner of the Netherlands south through Holland, Belgium, and France to the Med. Piet is an ardent cyclist and rides his bike at several stops along the route and into the Pyrenees. He ends up in Toulouse, finding a new love, new friends and new experiences, but also becomes involved in a terrorist plot for revenge on the police of Paris. The story is in three parts: traveling south from the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, a new life in Toulouse and a mysterious trip to Paris which puts Piet at great risk.

Author Information

Tom Sommers, an American, began his canal-cruising avocation with a trip in 1966 aboard a classic wooden motorboat from Cayuga Lake, in the Finger Lakes of Central New York, through the New York State Barge Canal (Erie Canal) and the Oswego Canal to Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. Later canal trips included one across the length of the Erie Canal and down the Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty. After early retirement from an engineering career, Tom moved to coastal North Carolina where he boated on the IntraCoastal Waterway and worked as a boat broker and as an advertising sales representative for a boating magazine. In early 2000 Tom and his wife Carol acted on a longtime desire to live in Europe and cruise the canals and rivers. Their first year was in Paris, on the Canal St Martin, then on the river Seine near Conflans-Ste-Honorine, and later on the northern coast of Brittany. During these years they have traveled extensively along the waterways and visited France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy and England. Beginning with the monthly newsletter Cruising the Canals & Rivers of Europe in September 2000, Tom currently offers forty e-book waterway guides, as well as an extensive website describing the inland waterways of Europe
