Language: English Table of ContentsReviews"MKTG approved copy: ""Charmingly inspirational..."" - Kirkus Reviews A slim, heartwarming graphic biography gives a capsule view of the life and discoveries of Marie Curie. Little Manya Skłodowska, growing up in 19th-century Poland, studies in secret. But Manya and her sisters, drawn with big-eyed and cherubic faces, look out for one another. First Manya works to send her sister Bronya to university, and then, finally, it's her own turn. At the Sorbonne, in Paris, Manya-now going by Marie-earns repeated recognition for her work. She meets Pierre Curie, and they fall in love. There's space here for Marie's loving and happy relationship with Pierre, for the family they raise, for her research and two Nobel Prizes, and for her philanthropy. The sexism Marie encountered in her life is lightly touched upon, and the xenophobia not at all. Pierre, as pink-cheeked as Marie and almost as wide-eyed, is portrayed as an A-plus ally pushing for greater recognition of his wife's achievements; Pierre Curie's actual Nobel lecture provides his supportive words. This tiny volume doesn't delve into the actual science, but it's likable and irrepressibly cheerful (even though it covers Marie's and Pierre's tragic deaths). The illustrations of these White characters are as simple as the text: cartoonish and fond. The periodic table in the illustrations is inaccurate both for Curie's time and for today, which is a shame. Charmingly inspirational in tone despite a dearth of science heft. (Graphic biography. 7-11) -- Kirkus Reviews * https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/kaara-kallen/marie-curie-kallen/ * MKTG approved copy: ""...they make inspiring character studies for readers in elementary grades."" -School Library Journal Gr 3-5-Kicking off a new series of graphic biographies, these compact profiles offer quietly respectful overviews of the lives and achievements of two of the 20th century's most iconic female role models. Chronicling the life of Marie Curie, Kallen uses a contemporary idiom (""I'm OK with studying hard,"" declares young Marie Sklodowska) and gives due attention to the contributions of Curie's husband and daughters along with her own discoveries, medical work in World War I, and later achievements at the renowned Radium Institute. Kallen broadens Curie's skill set by viewing her as ""not only an extraordinary scientist"" but also ""a clever communicator and manager."" Though Burke makes a common but incorrect assertion that Abraham Lincoln freed all enslaved people, she likewise presents a similarly well-rounded picture of her subject; in her book, a modern child asks her grandmother who Rosa Parks was and gets an earful that tracks the ""Mother of the Civil Rights Movement"" from birth to bus seat, and then on to a long life of behind-the-scenes political activism. Parks's features change along with her body as she matures in Clester's cartoon scenes, but she remains recognizable; in Baker's neatly drawn panels Curie looks like an adult and barely ages from first page to last. If neither figure displays a great range of emotion, they do both exude winning dignity and intelligence. Who wouldn't want to, as Parks herself urged, be kind, be brave, and ""do one tiny thing"" to change the world? VERDICT The lack of back matter makes these less offerings suitable for research than other resources, but they make inspiring character studies for readers in elementary grades. Highly Recommended."" - The English Association A delightful graphic biography that introduces young readers to the iconic female scientist Marie Curie. The book celebrates her phenomenal achievements. The only woman ever awarded two Nobel Prizes - one in physics and one in chemistry, she discovered radium, was the first to use the term radioactivity and was a pioneer in the use of X-rays and radiation therapies. The story starts with young Manya Skłodowska studying in secret in Poland. Manya and her sisters look after each other. Manya works so her sister, Bronya, can go to university. Then Manya, who has changed her name to Marie, goes to the Sorbonne. Her scientific work is respected, and she meets and falls in love with Pierre Curie. The book shows us the importance of Pierre's support, of family values and of the children they love. The humanitarian side of Marie's work is also explained. I am impressed by the way the book acknowledges her stunning achievements, but still manages to present her as ""one of us"". The final page says ""And it all started when she was a curious kid. Maybe just like you."" The language is contemporary, and the book is well designed with attractive illustrations and speech bubbles that make the information accessible. The beauty of this graphic novel is most definitely the illustrations. They bring the story alive and the expressions on the characters' faces will allow all children to understand the different emotions they go through. The speech bubbles are written in language that younger children would understand with support and older children would engage with. It tells an in-depth story of Marie Curie from her time as a student in her Polish school, her acceptance into a world-famous university, her marriage, children, degrees, Nobel Prizes and her eventual death at the age of 66. It is full of inspirational quotes and stories to show children just how much can be achieved if you believe in your abilities and work hard! 'We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.'This would be perfect as a guided-reading text or a reading-for-pleasure novel for children aged 9-11, with a wonderful link to the science curriculum, looking at inspirational scientists. It would have been useful if the book contained a glossary of terms to help younger children access the text, but this could be a lovely post-read activity for children to complete. There are also many terms that children in primary school do not need to know in primary science, for example the elements of the periodic table. Overall, this is a beautiful text that would engage older primary children, with stunning illustrations, that tells the remarkable and inspiring story of Marie Curie's life. -- The Association for Science Education * https://www.ase.org.uk/system/files/PS%20173%20p31-32%20Reviews.pdf *" Author InformationKaara Kallen is a writer, editor, teacher, learner, and activist.
