First issued in 1980, many of the same problems are found to be facing public officials today - fiscal stress, doing more with less, productivity enhancement, privatization, cutback management, retrenchment, and economic development are still very much part of the vernacular of urban management. A few new themes have surfaced - W. Edward Deming's ""total quality management"" (TQM) and Osborne and Gaebler's ""reinventing government"" have achieved considerable popularity among elected officials and are considered in this edition. The book is intended as a comprehensive overview of urban management, including the environmental context, service delivery, management processes, and strategic planning and economic development in major US cities.
