OverviewThis book describes and discusses the available joint preservation techniques for maintaining the stability homeostasis of the lower extremity joints – specifically the hip, knee, and ankle – following injury. Readers will find detailed coverage of anatomy, pathology, techniques for repair, restoration, and regeneration, and rehabilitation strategies. Joint preservation is an emerging field in Orthopaedics that represents a response to the limitations of joint replacement technology. Using the techniques now available, surgeons can try to prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions affecting the joints, particularly in young patients. Furthermore, modern tissue engineering offers the potential for whole-joint resurfacing, thereby achieving complete restoration. Optimal implementation of these techniques depends upon further refinement of methods and continuing improvements in knowledge of biomechanics, biology, and anatomy. Against this background, the present book is an ideal guide to the latest treatment modalities that will appeal to all who wish to learn more about indications, goals, procedures, and expected outcomes. Mats Brittberg served as President of the International Cartilage Repair Society from 2006 to 2008. He has also chaired the ESSKA 2000 Articular Cartilage Committee (2005–8) and is a past board member (2001–3) of Tissue Engineering Society International (now “TERMIS”). Prof. Brittberg has received various awards, including the Genzyme ICRS Lifetime Achievement Award in Cartilage Research (2010) and the UK Cartilage Club and SK Research Foundation Scientific Award (2012 and In 2014, Mats Brittberg also received the SKF and UK Cartilage Club’s Life time achievement Award. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Cartilage since 2013 and has served as an Associate Editor for Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy (2009–14), as well as being a member of the editorial boards of various other journals. He is the author ofmore than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has coedited several books, including the Springer publication Techniques in Cartilage Repair Surgery (2014). Konrad Slynarski, MD, PhD, is an orthopaedic surgeon working in the field of sports medicine with a particular focus on orthobiology, osteoarthritis, and cartilage repair. Since 2019 he has been Head of the Slynarski Knee Clinic in Warsaw, Poland, with responsibility for the treatment of patients with sports-related injuries and osteoarthritis. Prior to taking up this position, he was an orthopaedic surgeon at the Lekmed and CMS Sports Medicine Center, Warsaw (2007–2018). Dr Slynarski completed his MD and PhD degrees at The Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, and completed research fellowship at Case Western University, Cleveland, USA - with Arnold Caplan PhD on Mesenchymal Stem Cells - based cartilage repair (funded by the Polish-American Kosciuszko Foundation). He obtained his board certification in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2006. Dr. Slynarski was a founder and President of the Polish Arthroscopy Society and acted as Chairman of the International Joint Preservation Congresses held in Warsaw in 2013 - 2019. He is a current member of the ICRS, ESSKA Osteotomy Committee, and has also served on the ESSKA Cartilage Committee.” Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
