Author Information

Jan van Schaik is an architect at MvS Architects, a researcher and senior lecturer at RMIT Architecture & Urban Design, and a creative sector consultant at Future Tense. He has two decades of experience designing award winning prototypical public and residential buildings in both local and international settings, leading innovative research projects, and providing strategic advice and services to the creative sector. Jan's work has received awards from the Australian Institute of Architects for the Victorian College of the Arts Centre for Ideas, Southbank in 2004, the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, Healesville Sanctuary in 2006, Wattle Avenue House, Mildura in 2012, Edithvale Seaford Wetlands Discovery Centre, Edithvale in 2012, and RMIT New Academic Street in 2018. In 2008, the Australian Wildlife Health Centre was a recipient of the Premier's Design Award, as was the Edithvale Seaford Wetlands Discovery Centre in 2012. In 2015 the St Arnaud Street Museum, developed with Maudie Palmer AO, received a commendation for Community Engagement in the National Local Government awards and in the same year the Alice Smith School (designed in conjunction with iPartnership.LCW,) was awarded the PAM Category 13 Gold award for collaboration. In 2018 RMIT New Academic Street (designed in conjunction with Lyons, NMBW, HAW, Peter Maddison and TCL) was awarded in the AIA Victoria architecture awards for: the Melbourne Prize; the Victorian Architecture Medal; the Henry Bastow Award for Educational Architecture; the Joseph Reed Award for Urban Design; the Award for Interior Architecture; and the Award for Sustainable Architecture. Jan's work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, the RMIT Design Hub, the National Gallery of Victoria, RMIT Storey Hall Gallery, Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture, The Australian Embassy Gallery Washington, the Melbourne Festival, the Beijing Biennale, Bridge Gallery London, Moving Galleries Melbourne, Object Gallery Sydney, Sarah Scout Presents Melbourne, Neon Parc Melbourne and the Museum of Victoria. Past appointments include deputy chair of Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, chair of the City of Melbourne Creative Spaces working group, committee member of Mildura Palimpsest Biennale, adviser to the Regional Arts Victoria's Small Town Transformation project, and a member of the development and fundraising committee at West Space. Jan is currently a board member and chair of the development and fundraising committee at NETS Victoria. Jan is the founder and producer of the WRITING & CONCEPTS public lecture and publication series, which reflects on the role that writing plays in the development of contemporary creative practice. The series, now in its fifth year, has hosted over 90 talks by arts organisations in Melbourne, New South Wales and South Australia. Each year, the series produces a companion publication designed and published by Art + Australia.
