Based on the work of the Nuffield Extended Literacy (EXEL) project, this work offers a range of practical suggestions for enhancing literacy work in the secondary school. It includes: detailed accounts of what teachers in various subjects areas have done to enhance the literacy element in their teaching and, in turn, to extend pupils' learning of subject content; and a clear framework for thinking about literacy in secondary teaching from both a whole-school and a classroom perspective.
