Reviews

'The UN Convention on the rights of the child states that hearing the voice of the child is a core principle of protecting their rights. Therefore, this book is about protecting children’s rights. It is a refreshing statement of intent around giving ALL children, particularly those in primary education, the skills and confidence to speak up and have their voices heard. This is so important, because by Siobhan working with disadvantaged children, and those with special educational needs, she is ensuring that they will no longer feel dispossessed or separate from the world of their classmates. Her vast experience of putting these ideas into practice, with such a range of children, means the book will be an invaluable tool to very many educators. The ability to tell your own story, from your point of view, and with your emphasis, is a gift that should never be underestimated and this book should help to prove that. This book is a really useful resource to all those working in the education system, but also to anyone who is engaging with children in other realms, such as sport, drama, youth work, music and arts because they too need to be able to hear the voices and opinions of the children they serve.' - Dr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children, Ireland 'Dr. Siobhán Keenan Fitzgerald is a passionate and well-informed advocate of encouraging young people to develop the confidence and skill to make their voices heard. ’Listen’ is a valuable and comprehensive addition to a growing body of research and practice that highlights the importance of oracy in learning and for life. Combining both personal reflection, her own research and multiple other sources, the author valuably coheres different strands of evidence to make a powerful case for not just why children’s voices need to be heard, but also how to make this happen. Mindful of the challenges, practical in its recommendations, ‘Listen’ shows how it is possible to envisage homes, schools and communities that foster creative, thoughtful and articulate speakers and listeners who will be tomorrow’s informed, active and engaged citizens.' - Alan Howe, Oracy Cambridge – the Hughes Hall Study Centre for Oracy, University of Cambridge 'Prepare to embark on an enlightening journey as Siobhán Keenan Fitzgerald’s groundbreaking book, titled with the powerful punctuation of a full stop after the word ‘Listen’, beckons us to pause and truly absorb its profound message. This isn’t just another addition to the discourse on children’s rights; it is a call to action. For far too long, the narrative surrounding children’s voices and citizenship capacities, has been confined to theory. Fitzgerald’s work breaks away from this stagnation, providing tangible examples, first hand experiences, and compelling evidence that propel us towards the actualisation of children’s rights. Siobhan’s book is a treasure trove of practical insights, supported by innovative research, making it a must read for anyone seeking to not only understand but to actively engage with the realisation of children’s rights and voices. As you delve into the pages, you will discover a wealth of knowledge that transcends theoretical discourse, learning from one of the foremost authorities in the field. Read this book and empower yourself to champion the cause for children’s voice, agency, participation, and consideration in all matters affecting them.' - Fiona Collins, Dublin City University (DCU) Changemaker Schools Network Co-ordinator 'Siobhán Keenan Fitzgerald observes how children’s voices could be stronger in homes, schools and in society generally and she advocates enthusiastically for all children’s voices to be heard. In Listen she has distilled years of learning, practising, teaching and studying public speaking and has packaged her expertise to create an inspiring resource for teachers. Listen shows how teaching primary school children to speak publicly prepares them for active citizenship and enriches their later lives because they were listened to as children. The author’s steadfast belief in the power and beauty of children’s voices underlies the strategies and resources presented in Listen. I encourage all primary teachers to read this book highlighting and annotating key sections because you’ll want to revisit the book’s ideas and strategies again and again.' - Séan Delaney, PhD, Author of Become the Primary Teacher Everyone Wants to Have, Presenter and producer of Inside Education podcast and Vice President (Academic Affairs), Marino Institute of Education, Dublin.
