Overview

"Being able to understand and engage social interactions and emotions with self-regulation are learned skills. These authors focus on developing these skills with preschool children as a means for helping them to better succeed in academics and relationships. Topics include separation anxiety, attention-seeking, clingingness, advice to parents for how children are affected by 'screen time' and how to manage it, fun ways to say ""Good-bye"", attention concerns and daily functioning guidelines. Too often, such skills are engaged only when children display inappropriate or challenging behavior. It is important to differentiate between children misbehaving and children making a mistake. Use this book to help children make friends and form relationships with others; to know, recognize and develop social and emotional skills for various ages; to spot red flags seen as more challenging behavior needing special help. Roberts and Hoover also encourage the need for school staff and parents to forge a partnership to help students with more challenging behaviors learn effective ways of dealing with their emotions on a day to day basis. Many examples are given with suggested dialog speaking directly to parents' and caregivers' questions and concerns."

Reviews

Roberts and Hoover provide educators and parents with much needed guidelines on crucial aspects of social-emotional development, among them: the difference between children misbehaving and making a mistake; the skills needed to make friends and form relationships with others; the development of social and emotional skills for children at various ages, and the red flags seen for more challenging behavior. It also encourages the need for school staff and parents to forge a partnership to help students with more challenging behaviors learn effective ways of dealing with their emotions on a day to day basis. --Erin Saar, M.A., Professional School Counselor, Prince William County Public Schools Roberts and Hoover have managed to translate the technobabble related to the social and emotional development of children with this addition to their Let's Talk series of books on early childhood development. This book is short enough to read in one sitting yet specific enough to address actual questions asked by parents about the social and emotional development of their children. Included are specific red-flags that may signal when it is appropriate to consult an early childhood development specialist. A must-read for all parents who want to understand what to expect as they raise their children and what they can do if they encounter challenges along the way. --Robert J. Chapman, Ph.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Behavioral Health Counseling (Retired), Drexel University This book answers the frequent question by parents, Why is my child doing that? Roberts and Hoover provide clear explanations and examples of pre-academic skills that children need for selfregulation and social-emotional development. I recommend this book to all parents and caregivers of young children. --Kristen Pape Scott, M.Ed., ECSE, Preschool Special Education Teacher, Prince William County Public Schools As a parent of two adult men, one of whom has special needs, I would love to have had this book as a guide when helping them as children to develop healthy relationships with others and to learn ways to regulate their emotions. --Margie Talbot, Special Education Teaching Assistant [Here] are useful tools to help our young children learn to be safe and successful in their daily lives. I highly recommend this book to parents, educators and anyone searching to gain perspective and new strategies in areas of early social-emotional development. --Tiffany P. Atienza, M.Ed., Special Education, K-12
