Overview

"Here is a second book of engaging, creative, and theologically astute poems for each Sunday of the church year and occasional other days based on the texts for Year B of the Revised Common Lectionary--Original Testament, Gospel, Letters, and Psalms. With the conviction that Scripture always proclaims something new about God, each of these 107 poems reveal a surprise, often with humor, like the proclamations made by the biblical writers. There are five new hymn texts with suggested tunes, and another poem can be a light-hearted choir anthem. For preachers, study groups, and personal devotions, the index of 128 biblical references will make the book usable at any time. With titles like """"Kind of Disturbed by Some of These Scriptures,"""" """"Does Jesus Still Thumb His Nose?"""" and """"From the KJV to Shazam!"""" these poems will provoke, amuse, inform, and inspire anyone who suspects the Bible's purpose is to proclaim grace for our lives."

"""Aquinas believed that both poetry and theology worked at the limits of language. Scott L. Barton has dared to bring the best of both to Lectionary Year B because he believes the preacher and the poet can and should be best friends. Use this sparkling resource to experience how the words and images of a poet can breathe fresh life into the preacher's clay."" --Leonard Sweet, author of Jesus Speaks: Learning to Recognize and Respond to the Lord's Voice and founder of preachthestory.com ""Scott is a particularly unique pastor. The obvious (from this publication) is that he possesses amazing lyrical and poetic gifts. But just under that surface is careful exegetical study. The result is poignant, pithy, yet deeply spiritual words that touch us as they amaze us. His images were there all along, but Scott gives them life in our minds in surprising ways."" --Mark Tammen, General Presbyter/Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Long Island, Presbyterian Church (USA) ""Poetry is a language of the soul, which Scott Barton speaks with fluent grace. This collection of lectionary poems helps us experience the ineffable presence of God in the written word. Whether used for private prayer or preparation for preaching, be prepared 'to grasp, with all God's people, what is the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of Christ, and to know it, though it is beyond knowledge' (Eph 3:18-19)."" --Paul Heller, former congregational pastor and PC(USA) Mission Co-Worker in Malawi"
