Overview

"This is a book of insightful, often humorous, and always grace-filled poems for each Sunday of the church year and occasional other days. Based on one or more texts for Year A of the Revised Common Lectionary--Original Testament, Gospel, Letters, and Psalms--each poem reveals surprises about God much like the proclamations made by the biblical writers. For preachers, the poems here will be a joyful springboard to the sermon, each one a mini-sermon in itself; and for people in the pews, a brand-new way of thinking about the Bible. The index of 124 biblical references will make the book usable at any time. With titles like """"The Once and Future Comeuppance of the Butters,"""" """"What's Really Original Here,"""" """"Three Drinking Limericks,"""" and """"They Thought It Was the Feds,"""" these poems will help the reader discover the God known and shown by Jesus and the earliest faith communities as amazing, abundant, boundary-pushing, and bold."

Reviews

The author's lyrics and rhythms build sublime images and vivid scenes. I predict that Barton's Lectionary Poems will become an enduring resource for imaginative preaching and teaching. --W. Kenneth Williams, pastor and denominational executive, American Baptist Churches, USA Scott Barton's ingenious lectionary poems can function as a kind of alternative commentary, a completely different--even contrasting at times--set of lenses which provide a fresh, surprising, and often startlingly relevant perspective on the selected passages of Scripture. They open the door to a genuine creativity and imagination that can lead the preacher from written words toward the Living Word. --J. Barrie Shepherd, Minister Emeritus, The First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York Like seeing the 'world in a grain of sand or heaven in a wildflower, ' these short poems distill the essence of the gospel with more fullness than most sermons. These little poems are like a gut punch of grace or smelling salts for the soul. Barton has a gift for calling our attention back to that which matters most. --Sarah Buteux, co-pastor, First Churches of Northampton, Northampton, Massachusetts This is a book for those who listen to Scripture with their hearts: who preach it, study it, or ponder and describe its uncountable intersections with the work of living in this world at this time. It stirs the pot with warm humor and sharp wit, honesty and courage. For some, it'll supply a rich trove of fresh images and questions as they interpret ancient words; for others, it'll provide wise and spirited company for the complexities of contemporary life. --Rick Spalding, chaplain (retired), Williams College
