OverviewUnderlying the constitutional crisis, there are major tensions in the process of European integration that could not been solved by the European Convention, which was itself constrained by the existing Treaties. This book argues that these tensions are linked with the pre-requisites of a post-national rights-based union, which have not been met by the European Union. This book seeks to investigate how these values of the rule of law, solidarity, democracy and solidarity can be understood in a supranational entity. The authors argue that these challenges constitute the unfinished agenda of the European integration process, and they call for further research on the basic conditions for democracy and rule of law in the multilevel configuration that makes up the EU. The authors highlight and examine four key themes which they claim are of utmost importance for the sustainability of the European political order: The problem of the rule of law in a context of governance beyond the nation state The social deficit of the Union The problem of identity and collective memories The problem of institutionalising post-national democracy. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, the European Union and European studies.
