After four years teaching aeronautical meteorology in the Flying Professional Institute of China, he went in 1986 to the United Kingdom to study for PhD at the University of Edinburgh. He has been working at the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1992. He is a research scientist at the MIT now, and has published many papers and the book Geostrophic Wave Circulations. His work on the atmospheric rivers in 1992 was reported by more than 10 newspapers and journals, including The Times and Science.
