Overview

The human interest in language is spurred by the intrinsic need to communicate. This intrinsic need makes communication the most important aspect of human life. Language is a universal tool used in expressing our inner sense and emotions. We use language to decode complexities and abstract thoughts. It is through language that we communicate with others, fulfill our daily needs and wants, and establish rules that align us within our different cultures. The simplest definition of language is that it is a physical, verbal, biologically and basic form of communication. Some experts’ definition of language is that it is a learned behavior that involves a response to stimulus. In some instances, language can be termed as a verbal behavior that defines body movements and gestures that may or may not be aligned to spoken words. In defining language, we must also think about symbols, gestures, and motion as a common thing. The reason behind this is to ensure that the deaf community is considered. Languages all over the world have some common characteristics which define their organizational structures and order. When a child learns how to speak, read, and write, it is quite noticeable that there is an inherent connection in these skills. Some sections of this book can be used as instructional strategies to promote the integrated development of these three skills. The book also explores the foundation of language in the brain of a child and attempts to highlight different sections how language development in early childhood will influence a person in the later stages in communication or language use. Giving preference to the development of our reading skill is important as it helps us in understanding not only our thoughts but other people’s feelings as well. The development of our writing skills aids in the formulation and understanding of other people’s feelings. It also opens up an avenue for creativity. It is quite important that humans with both visual and hearing deficiencies have access to tools and opportunities that are needed to maintain and expand their individual literacy skills. Some of these materials include educational interpreters, picture representations, large prints, braille, audio readers and assistive technology devices. Children in the language and literacy skill development stages should be provided with the best learning environments and instructional strategies. This Book aims to explore human understanding of language and literacy development through the mind of infants, toddlers and preschool children.
