OverviewBritish Central Africa in the 1930s: Kudu, a remote town in the northern province is the boma - headquarters of the District Commissioner, Reginald Wall-Eyre, widely thought to be a raving lunatic, and half a dozen colonial officers who detest him. When a freak show arrives in town, the tribes in the area are convinced its prize exhibit, the Lion Man, is the work of the local witchdoctor, Nkanga'besa who had predicted he would turn an animal into a man. The witchdoctor finds himself up before the resident magistrate, and puts a curse on him. A few days later, the magistrate is found dead on the boma parade ground: no weapon, no footprints in the sand. The Chief of Police, Superintendent Scudd tries to solve the mystery in an atmosphere of fear and superstition. The witchdoctor disappears on his way to gaol, and then the resident magistrate's body also vanishes. The District Commissioner, convinced it is all a plot by the Boer Government in South Africa to invade the territory, goes around creating chaos. Meanwhile, Bubsy Flaherty, the barmaid of Hickory's Bar and Belle of Kudu becomes infatuated by the Lion Man with disastrous consequences.
