Overview1849, South China Sea: Before Kit Killigrew and the crew of HMS Tisiphone have even arrived in Hong Kong, they have the good fortune to capture China's most ruthless pirate Zhai jing-mu and save the life of his hostage Peri Dadabhoy. After handing Zhai over to the local authorities, Kit is free to enjoy the many pleasures the colony has to offer, including that of Peri's company. But Hong Kong seethes with tensions: the Triads are rapidly gaining more influence; the hostilities that started the Opium War are easily revived; and, when Zhai jing-mu's escapes from jail, the air of menace only intensifies. Even more dangerous are those who conspire to manipulate these circumstances to satiate their own greed. Only Killigrew sees the connection and it involves him in his most dangerous undertaking yet: one that will take the love of the only woman he's ever truly cared for, his professional integrity and, maybe, even his life... Killigrew races along like the friskiest frigate; packs all the punch of a might three-decker and is full of a roaring lust for the adventurous life' -- Northern Echo 20010201 'If you revel in the Hornblower and the Sharpe books, grab a copy of Jonathan Lunn's action-packed saga' -- Bolton Evening News 20010201 The second in a new series of historical naval adventures (launched last year with Killigrew RN), sends Kit Killigrew, now promoted to Second Lieutenant, on a dangerous voyage to fight the pirates seeking (in the mid-1880s) to dominate the South China Seas around the newly-burgeoning Hong Kong: a bustling, brawling, rapidly-expanding city full of energy, intrigue and violence; a frontier city on the edge of a new world, and new age, dedicated to trade in practically everything, but mainly tea - and opium. The traders themselves, many of them British , were 'hard, ruthless men who stopped at nothing in the pursuit of wealth'. So justice was rough and very ready, and the British navy, as always, was called upon to keep the peace. The stories are gloriously swashbuckling and heart-stopping. As befits the romantic hero of an adventure series, Kit bears a charmed life (though he has some very near-misses). He and his black side-kick, Able Seaman Molyneaux, make a splendid team. And they are not so continuously engaged in combat that Kit hasn't time to fall in love - with the beautiful Parsi daughter of a rich Indian trader. Many of the characters and incidents are drawn from real people and events. (Kirkus UK) Author InformationBorn in London, Jonathan Lunn started writing at the age of fifteen.
