Overview

Embarking on your first solo road trip. Receiving a special surprise that arrives out of the blue. Finding a sudden flash of inspiration that sets you on a wondrous new path. When we think about the moments that stand out in our memory, it's clear that our minds hold onto the unusual or unexpected. By tapping into students' innate curiosity, you can design memorable, meaningful learning experiences that captivate their interest and ignite their imaginations. Structured around four key elements that fuel engagement--surprise, curiosity, freedom, and inspiration--Keeping the Wonder offers practical strategies and abundant inspiration for K-12 educators to create lessons that are fun and compelling. Combining enchanting anecdotes, real-world experience, and a wealth of research, the authors share their collective expertise as educators and founders of the innovative Keeping the Wonder workshop. In this dynamic handbook, Jenna, Ashley, Abby, and Staci offer a fresh approach to learning through the lens of wonder. By providing creative ideas for switching up standard lesson plans in ways both subtle and profound, they show us how to recapture our fascination with the world by employing all of our senses, and enhance engagement and critical thinking for students and teachers alike.

Author Information

"Jenna Copper is a high school English teacher in Pennsylvania, and an instructional specialist who designs curriculum and presents professional development for educators. Earning her PhD in instruction and leadership, she is passionate about conducting and sharing educational research, and she has presented her work at national and state conferences, such as NCTE, PCTELA, and SITE. As an author and coauthor, she has been published in journals, textbooks, and online publication for publications with AACE, IGI Global, Read Write Think, and We Are Teachers. She is a lead presenter for the Keeping the Wonder Workshop specializing in lenses of learning and engaging reading and writing instruction. In addition to being a high school English teacher in East Tennessee, Ashley Bible is the creator of Keeping the Wonder Workshop and a resource designer. As a first-generation college graduate, she proudly earned her master of arts in English literature, which has served her well as a teacher, author, and lifelong learner. Staci Lamb is an English teacher in Maryland, and served as the 2018 Cecil County Teacher of the Year and 2018 finalist for the state. Staci was also the recipient of the 2019 Maryland NEA Foundations in Teaching Excellence Award. She has a bachelor's degree in English education from University of Delaware, and is pursuing her master's degree in transformational educational leadership at Towson University. In the summer, she teaches for the University of Delaware's Upward Bound Math-Science Program. Although she recently fell in love with teaching middle school reading, Abigail Gross has spent most of her career teaching high school English, including American literature, journalism, newspaper, technical communication, and more. Abby is committed to crafting student-centered learning experiences that engage and empower her students. When she's not teaching, you can find Abby designing resources, blogging, and helping other teachers. In addition to facilitating student engagement workshop sessions at Keeping the Wonder, she has led professional development on integrating technology and presented on multi-genre text sets at NCTE. Rebecca Stern has a voice that has been described as warm, expressive, articulate, and sincere. Her forty-plus years as a professional violinist has instilled in her a deep love for the music of language and an ear for accents, as well as the ability to learn, be directed, and adapt. Her years as an oncology massage therapist and hospice volunteer lend a comfort with medical vocabulary and a voice that just oozes bedside manner. In her ""me"" time, she practices meditation and yoga, is attempting to keep a sourdough starter alive, and loves hiking, biking, and exploring the natural beauty of the Idaho home she shares with her husband and their two cats."
