Overview

Justin Succeeds, celebrates the uniqueness of each child through the story of twin brothers. Justin is a twin. His twin Paul is more athletic, gets better grades and does everything well. Justin takes care of his things while Paul is more reckless, yet Justin always ends up sharing everything that used to be his. Justin tries his hand at various activities trying to find something that he is really good at, but ultimately, Paul is better. When the school play comes around, Paul gets the lead. Justin doesn't even try out. He doesn't even see a reason to compete anymore. When Paul can't perform in the play, Justin comes to the rescue. He not only realizes that he has found his talent, he realizes being good at everything, is also stressful for his brother. Giving birth to twins is a relatively rare occurrence. However, in industrialized countries, the use of infertility treatments is driving the typical statistics higher. Each of the thousands of twins born worldwide often struggle with defining an identity separate from that of their twin. Becoming an individual is a challenge unique to multiples and probably the greatest challenge a twin will face, whether identical or fraternal. To the typical person, twins are often seen as carbon copies of each other. They share a birthday, characteristics, meet developmental milestones at the same time, attend the same school, etc. and all of this contributes to them being seen as one. When twins differ in their abilities, whether in their academic or physical skills, this becomes more apparent to others, and even to the twins themselves. When comparisons occur, they may ultimately hurt the less-performing twin's self-esteem and can also set up the siblings for unhealthy competition. One of the most important things that parents of multiples can do is to celebrate the unique characteristic of each child. Being an individual, not being a twin, should define the child.
