Overview

After winning the Thetis Blacker Award, Seyram Agbleze embarks on a trip through West Africa to observe the different textiles of the region. African textiles are loved by many but little is known about their history. These textiles have a hypnotic effect, the ability to make a grown man go backpacking on a quest to find out more about them. Through these travels, he discovers the exciting history and traditions behind the various textiles. This book is an account of his journey and it does take the reader on a vivid journey of West African textile traditions. About the Author Seyram Agbleze hails from Ghana (West Africa). The Ghanaian writer was educated at Central University College in Accra. He is regarded a notable figure in the representation of African textiles and the preservation of African cultural heritage. He believes African textiles are a tangible manifestation of African culture, central to African identity and a repository of intangible cultural heritage which needs safeguarding. In addition to his literary contributions in the field of African textiles/Art history he is also a leading textile artist in Ghana. Seyram Agbleze's work has been vital in championing the recognition and preservation of African textile traditions. In 2022 he was named in Undocublack Network's Black Personalities of Choice for Black History Month (Lift Every Voice Up Series). He is a recipient of the Thetis Blacker Award from Temenos Academy, London (patron King Charles III). He is also a fellow of the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA)- its inaugural recipient of the MIASA Art Fellowship and the first non-postdoctoral fellow of the institute.
