She completed her schooling from different places around the world traveling with her father, a Diplomat in the Indian Foreign Services. She practiced criminal law for six years after which she joined the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles to pursue her studies in Egyptian Archaeology. Her doctoral thesis looked at the ways in which knowledge and skill get transferred from generation to generation. Dr. Sonali Gupta started the first ever non- invasive archaeological field school in India and set up the Himalayan Institute of Cultural and Heritage Studies in the beautiful and picturesque Kullu valley in the Himalayas.
