OverviewExcerpt from Johns Hopkins University Circulars, Vol. 18: December, 1898 The success of the Know Nothing party in Maryland was due to z Largely increased immigration and the active participation of the new comer in politics. The efforts of the Catholics to obtain a division of the public school fund in favor of sectarian schools; the visit of a Papal legate; and the ultramontane position taken by some Catholic journals. The middle course taken by the party on the slavery question; and the personal popularity of Millard Fillmore. The disappearance of the Whig party, and dissatisfaction in the ranks of the Democratic party. The general political unrest of the period. The end of the year 1856 sharply divides the history of the party. But after this date principles are entirely lost sight of in the struggle for office. The Democratic party offered no effective resistance, and elections were carried by fraud and intimidation. Four years longer did the party rule in Baltimore, and not until the control of the police was taken away from the Mayor and put in the hands of the State authorities did the regime of the Know Nothings come to an end.
