He became a 1st Dan in 1970 and recently tested for 9th Dan in October 2012. Known as Super Dan on the American point fighting circuit, he was a 4-time national top ten rated champion. Dan came out of retirement in 1990 to win two gold medals at the Seattle Goodwill Games and again in 2002 to win a world championship title at the 4th Funakoshi Shotokan Assn World Championships at the age of 50. Aside from karate, Dan is also a highly rated master in the deadly art of Filipino arnis. He trained with Prof. Remy Presas from 1980 until his passing in 2001. He earned a 6th degree black belt from Prof. Presas and also the distinction of being the only western Senior Master in this art. Dan continued his studies under Manong Ted Buot in Balintawak Eskrima. His most recent studies in the Filipino martial arts include working with Dr. Mark Wiley in Integrated Eskrima. Dan's own curriculum is called the MA80 System Arnis/Eskrima. Dan's first book, American Freestyle Karate: A Guide to Sparring, was published in 1980 and became an instant classic and remains in print to this day.
