Reviews

In short, the text is well written, thorough, and has much to offer. The overall set of resources is nicely developed and useful. These materials would be especially useful to instructors who want to cover invitational speaking in an introductory course and/or employ a service learning approach to the course. The goal of the text is an ambitious one, and the materials produced are impressive.

I am very happy with this text. It is strong because the author does not forget this is a practicum class, so there are many, many examples and resources in the book, and it is focused on being student-relevant. My impression of this text is that it is a student-friendly, well organized textbook that will provide students with all of the basics they need to master in a Public Speaking course. In describing it to a colleague, I would emphasize the comprehensive nature of the text and the materials, making it especially user-friendly for a newer instructor. This book provides a nice balance between traditional and non-traditional concepts in public speaking. Some of the newer concepts include invitational speaking and service learning. It also comes with a nice software package for creating exams.
