Overview

In his eye-opening and illuminating debut, Phil Crompton, the former headteacher and CEO of a multi-academy trust, is challenged by two old school friends to question the impression the school system has left on a generation of people. Armed with purpose, Phil embarks on a unique journey that takes him across the country to get himself closer to `the truth’ and talk to the general public in cafes in Norwich, offices in Newark, banks in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, shops in Nuneaton and community centres in Neasden where he discovers their experiences and reflects on what we can do to move forward and truly improve. Some were glowing in praise, others less so.

Author Information

Phil Crompton was immersed in the English education system for 36 years, most recently as CEO of the Trent Academies Group – a multi-academy trust consisting of three secondary schools in Nottingham. His working life has been spent in the East Midlands and he has developed a detailed understanding of what works and what doesn’t work in secondary schools. In 2005 he was asked to take over a school in a former coal mining area and took it on a rapid improvement journey in a short period of time. Phil then accepted a post at Rushcliffe School in one of the wealthier parts of Nottingham and led it to outstanding status. Throughout his career he has explored ways in which education could be made relevant to those who questioned it, most recently by working closely with the Edge Foundation and the Careers and Enterprise Company. For four years he was a member of the government’s Secondary Headteacher Reference Group and also advised Ofsted for another two years. He has travelled widely to see education systems in action in other countries. Phil now has a portfolio existence. He coaches senior leaders, offers support to senior teams, works as a governor at a further education college and writes about the need to create a more inclusive education system. He also looks after a pony.
