OverviewThe author shares her experience as an abused woman to bring awareness of the devastating effects on women and children because of the way domestic violence is treated in the United States. Although her story dates back many years, the same inadequacies and injustices prevail. In this great nation which speaks of freedom and equality, domestic violence is not punished as other violent crimes, but as chattel law where a woman is treated as property. The deficiencies in the courts and social services must be changed. The victims most affected are the defenseless children. In Search of a Family is a true story of how a child's life was, and remains tragically affected, by a father's manipulation of the system. Family members, the communities, the legal/judicial system and social services can protect the victims of domestic violence by speaking up to change laws and social behavior that are discriminating and unjust.
